Default How are different index numbers differ?

I learned there are different index numbers for our glasses. Like 1.56 index, 1.50 index, 1.67 and 1.74 index. How does it affect the lenses? What is it exactly and why do I need to select an index number? Is there a standard index? How does it differ from all the others?

Default Index Numbers

Index number tells how thick or thin the lenses are. The higher the index number, the thinner the lenses are.

Default most of us want the thinnest, lightest eyeglasses

Thinner and lighter high-index lens materials have impacted eyeglasses in a very significant way. Thin eyeglasses are attractive; thick ones aren't. Light eyeglasses are comfortable; heavy ones aren't. So it's no surprise that most of us want the thinnest, lightest eyeglasses possible.

High index lenses are mostly recommended for high prescription lenses, they are more light weight and thinner lenses.
