Default myopia, and hyperopia,

The medical term for nearsightedness is myopia, correctable with glasses, contact lenses or, in some cases, refractive surgery (LASIK or Corneal Ring Implants). The medical term for farsightedness is hyperopia, correctable with glasses, contact lenses or, in some cases, refractive surgery. Related conditions (also correctable with glasses or contact lenses) include astigmatism and presbyopia.

Normally people will visit eye doctor because they felt something changes on their vision, then that is the time that we will contact or visit our optometrist. but i suggest to visit optometrist as early as need, to avoid eye problems

When you go and visit an eye doctor and found out you have an eye vision correction, a doctor's prescription is given to you.

As you can see there are numbers indicated on your prescription:

OD -right eye
OS -left eye
SPH/SPHERE determines + nearsightedness and - farsightedness
CYLINDER and AXIS combines to determine your astigmatism.
ADD/ reading/near- determines how much power gets added for reading or near vision.
